Katherine Kelly says she in awe of her Happy Valley co-star Sarah Lancashire.
The 35-year-old actress has been heaping praise on Sarah, who plays Sergeant Catherine Cawood in the BBC series, describing her as a ‘national treasure’.
‘I think she is amazing, she is a national treasure and probably one of our finest actresses,’ Katherine told the TV Times.
‘She is so versatile and brilliant and a great person.’
Like Sarah, Katherine got her big break on ITV soap Coronation Street, however she’d rather people didn’t make comparisons between them, as she feels she has a long way to go before she’s in the 51-year-old’s league.
‘I wouldn’t dare make that comparison,’ she added.
‘I wouldn’t put myself on the same pedestal as Sarah Lancashire. Christ no! I have only been out of Corrie for four years.’
Sarah played classic Corrie character Raquel Watts from 1991 to 1996 (although she returned for a one-off episode in 2000), while Katherine starred as Becky McDonald from 2006 to 2012.
The second series of Happy Valley has been a big hit with viewers and Katherine, who joined the show as DI Jodie Shackleton this year, was a fan beforehand.
‘I watched it while I was on maternity leave [after giving birth to daughter Orla in 2014] having my year away and being a mum in Melbourne,’ says the star, whose husband Ryan Clark is from Australia.
Happy Valley continues this Tuesday at 9pm on BBC1.
