MIAMI | On April 16, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador, killing at least 350 people, a number that is expected to rise as first responders reach the affected area. This is the strongest earthquake Ecuador has experienced since 1979.

Hundreds more have been injured, and there are reports of widespread damage to buildings, roads and other infrastructure. Communications are down or intermittent, further complicating damage assessment and need.

Given the widespread impact, Catholic Relief Services is coordinating with other humanitarian organizations and our partners to determine priorities.

Water, food and emergency shelter will be the biggest needs in the coming days. The people of Ecuador urgently need help. Archbishop Thomas Wenski is encouraging archdiocesan Catholics to help by donating to CRS. Here's the link

Ayude a Ecuador

As christians, we must give our hands to our sisters and brothers in Ecuador. Those of us who went through hurricane Andrew now how it feels after a disaster. But this is much, much worst. Hurricanes give warnings, not so the earthquakes. At this time, they are the living Christs. Are we going to have a special collection on a designated Sunday? We can also designate parishes by areas, for collections of food, water, pampers, blankets, etc. Can someone make arrangements for transportation? Let's put time, talent and treasure at work. SO MUCH HAS BEEN GIVEN TO US!!! What would Jesus do?
