Old Books Repurposed Into Paper Cups And Saucers By Cecilia Levy

Cecilia Levy has found a novel use for old books and comics. Instead of throwing them out, the Swedish artist transforms them into beautiful works of paper art.

Previously a bookbinder, Levy now takes the opposite approach to literature by tearing it up and pasting the pieces back together again. It may sound sacreligious to book-lovers, but when you take a look at the pictures below I’m sure you’ll agree that her work is in fact a loving testament to literature.

She first began experimenting with 3D paper objects in 2009. Since then she’s created a variety of different objects including cups, saucers, plates and bowls, and she’s always on the lookout for old books to transform so that their stories may continue in a new and unique form.

You can’t do that with a Kindle.

I thought at first I'd dislike anything I saw because defacing books has always seemed sacraligious to me; however, these stunning works of art pay homage to the written word, using materials that may or may not have been examples of great literature. I love that she could see the beauty of the multitude of colors in the comic book, the peace of the black typeface against stark white paper, and the luxurious feel of bond paper. I love that the texture of the various materials is so artfully used to represent the cap of an acorn, or the smooth artichoke skin. And I love the skill with which she's able to form very realistic looking pieces with items that start out, basically, plain and flat. I am in awe of her great talent.

I never throw books away. But some people do. I am really glad that people like Cecilia exist. And they give the books the second chance. To live, to shine, to make someone happy. Thank you for this :)

I don't know what's so sad about old books being made into cups. It just makes me sad to see pages torn out of books. Even if they were old.

If a book can no longer be read because someone tore pages from it or because it was damaged slightly due to a spill or an animal, this is the perfect way to keep them around and not throw them away. It's not a thing to be sad about. Rejoice in the fact that every book can still exist and doesn't have to be lost to the times.
