X-Files creator Chris Carter says new series won't be last

The X-Files has only just returned after a 14-year hiatus, but series creator Chris Carter is confident that the six-episode mini series won't be the last we see of Mulder and Scully.

The show, which has been airing in the UK on Channel 5 since its return, still has two episodes left to broadcast. However - spoilers ahead - it's set to end on a cliffhanger when the final credits of the micro-season roll.

Despite the challenge in getting series' leads Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny back together after more than a decade away from the show, and mixed critical and fan reaction to the revived X-Files, Carter says American TV network Fox will pick up more episodes. "They're going to ask for more. The ratings were very good. They were happy with the show. I talked to [Fox TV group CEO] Dana Walden today. She said they'd very much like more, but nothing's being negotiated yet," Carter told The Hollywood Reporter.

Although the new television series introduced new cast members Lauren Ambrose and Robbie Amell as junior FBI agents, they're not currently expected to step up as new headliners. The series has lived on the Mulder and Scully partnership, and the availability of its lead actors will likely impact when the next series materialises. "I have been speaking with David pretty regularly. I think he's game. I have spoken to Gillian less frequently, but I believe she would be game," Carter said. "I'm just working around their busy schedules. They both have families. It's another practical matter." "There's an appetite [from Fox] for more in the future, it's just a matter of figuring out how to get it done," he adds. "The last negotiations took about five months, so it could be a while before we figure out how to do this."

The season finale of The X-Files is set to air on Channel 5 in March.
