Google Translate can now translate signs in 27 different languages

Translate, one of Google’s most impressive apps, just got a major update that adds visual translation support for 20 additional languages.

The app can now visually translate to and from English, Bulgarian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Filipino, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Slovak, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian. Moreover, it can also do one-way translations from English to Hindi and Thai.

To put these additions in perspective, when the app launched this part of it supported seven languages.

If you’ve never seen this feature in action, it’s a sight to be seen. Essentially, the user can point their smartphone camera at something like a sign and the app will translate it in real-time, preserving things like the font and colour of the sign.

That’s not all, however, as Google has also improved the real-time voice conversation aspect of the app. With the update, this part of the service will work faster. Google says the upgrade in speed should be most noticeable on slow networks.

Download Google Translate from the Play Store and App Store. While you’re waiting for the app to download, watch the fun demo video the Translate team put together to show the app in action.
