Girls drop 4-0 decision to Gopher State rivals

Six hours after Team Wisconsin suffered a heartbreaking tie with the Minnesota Juniors, the older 'sisters' from Minnesota proved they could play as well, grabbing a 4-0 victory over TW Saturday evening in the CCM NIT at Braemar Ice Arena.

The seniors from the Gopher state were too fast, too proficient in their passing, and too feisty (within the framework of the rules, of course) for Team Wisconsin this day.

TW was handicapped by the fact they were missing two top forwards, a star defenseman, and both of their goalies. USM freshman goalie Marie Dedert subbed in net for TW.

The first period was scoreless despite a trio of power play chances (TW-2, MN-1).

Shots were 17-7 in favor of the high-flying MN Seniors.

They broke through in the middle period, scoring three times in a 12 minute span to break the game open.

Sydney Brodt got the puck and found herself behind the D, making a move, a deke, and flipping the puck over the left pad of Dedert just 46 seconds into the period for the 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, MN doubled the lead.

They cycled the puck in the right corner before Taylor Turnquist sprang free and zipped a shot from the bottom of the right circle that found the back of the net to make it 2-0, bad guys.

TW had a scoring chance midway through the period from in close, but were unable to lift the puck over the pad of goalie Chloe Crosby on two occasions.

Minnesota made it 3-0 with just under six minutes left when Kaitlin Radke stuffed a rebound past the TW goalie.

Each team had a man-advantage late in the stanza, but could not capitalize. Shots were 14-4 in favor of MN.

MN once again got an opening minute goal in the third with Radke's rebound goal at the 28 second mark for the final tally.

Shots were 14-5, Team MN.

Dedert ended her night with 41 saves, while Crosby (10) and Marit Larson (6) combined for 16 stops for Minnesota.

TW, based on pool play points, will have a rematch in the title game with the Seniors tomorrow at 10:20am.
