- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2016Fantastic look in detail at the Sermon on the Mount, from Matthew's gospel. I read it is daily bite sized pieces, which gave time for reflection and opened up some of Sheridan's insight. Hopefully, with plenty of elements that I can put into practice - one small change at a time. Sometimes Q detailed focus on a small passage of the bible can be very illuminating - this certainly was.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2016I am finding it quite stimulating

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2020Resilient offers a new way of thinking about the Sermon on the Mount with great relevance today and always. His style of writing makes each reflection readable and thought-provoking and I found that it stays in the mind to be thought about over a longer period. This is a book which continues to help me on my own Christian journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and practical reflections on walking closely with Jesus
This is a book of 90 readings tracing the theme of resilience through the Sermon on the Mount. Some might call it a devotional or simply a book of meditations but how one defines it doesn’t really matter. It is a book that challenges the reader to invest time in Jesus words to gain understanding and with the Spirit’s help move from head knowledge to action.
The book came about as a result of Sheridan walking through a season when he read the Sermon on the Mount every day. He began journaling and then writing some blog posts on his reflections.
There are six sections that generally follow the three chapters of the Sermon: Your Invitation, Your Calling, Your Relationships, Your Practices, Your Choices and Your Resilient Life.
Each reading starts with a verse, from the Sermon or other, a page and half of contemplation using a real life example or one from the Bible, and then ends with two questions to ponder and answer.
It is a book to be read slowly to allow Jesus’ words combined with Sheridan’s reflections to percolate. To read it too quickly would miss much of the power of its content.
I particularly appreciated section six: Your Resilient Life. Living a Jesus-Shaped life leads to resilience especially when life is tough. Voysey outlines four factors that researchers have identified as leading to human resilience: Emotional fitness, Family fitness, Social Fitness and Spiritual fitness. None of these are that surprising. Positive emotions, healthy relationships, bodies and minds plus the meaning and purpose that comes from serving someone greater than ourselves.
Besides the quality reflection of Jesus’ words, the one aspect of these readings that sets it apart is the challenge to do something about them. As Voysey sums up at the end:
“… a resilient life is made by putting his [Jesus] words into practice.”
The Sermon is a guide to live a different life, be “change agents to the world”, and Sheridan’s readings have challenged me to realise that an intimate walk with Jesus will better enable me to live such a life.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile, short, insightful devotional
I use Mr Voysey’s recent book on the Sermon on the Mount as a daily devotional. After the first few days I realized there was so much rich content in each “chapter” that I often ended up re-reading the same great topic a second day. Sheridan has connected spiritual purpose with practical daily actions and excellent Scripture that usually takes me deeper on my own. I might add, one of the attractive aspects of Resilient for me is that “chapters” are bite-sized ~ only one-and-a-half Pages long. A provocative question or two draws the reader into a personal reflection...no judgment, just a query that allows room for spiritual growth. This would be a GREAT book to give as a gift for any person wanting to plumb the depths of The Beatitudes and Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount. I heard Mr. Voysey interviewed on a radio program, and his charming, unencumbered manner whet my appetite to see how he weathered storms with such Grace.

5.0 out of 5 stars That does sound like a negative
This is a hard book to get through. That does sound like a negative, but it isn't. Several really great things about this book:
1) The "chapters" are written in brief, 2 pg, snippets, including verses, that expound on really, really deep Christian thought. Not just pablum that we've been exposed to as Christians over the years, but real heady, and heart-deep stuff;
2) I've only gotten through the first 90 pages or so. I've had to re-read most of them, and include my kids now, to prompt discussion. There is tons of insight, which leads to further pondering and reflection. It's good and inspired.
3) I've already purchased 2 copies, and will buy more to give away to friends.
This book goes right along with the "Resurrection Year" theme, and the practical and biblical ways we need to view, handle, and still glorify God in the difficult times, our very own resurrection year(s). Great job, Sheridan!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Devotional
I didn't know about Sheridan Voysey, until I got a booklet from Our Daily Bread..titled "when God says no"..this is a booklet concerning his and his wife Merryan's struggles with being childless. This led to me buying his book Resurrection Year (the full story of their lives during this 10 years), which led me to THIS book. The more I read Mr. Voysey's writing, the more I appreciate him. This book will help me to know and live out the Sermon on The Mount. I agree with other reviewers, read this slowly and thoughtfully. There is much food and spiritual drink here.
