The world remembers Prince

While Prince fans still eagerly await a public tribute for the late singer, a group of his famous friends gathered Wednesday night in Los Angeles to remember him.

Director Spike Lee, musician Nile Rodgers and singer Janelle Monae honored Prince at a special memorial service held at Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Billboard reported.

Prince death investigation: Doctor saw Prince twice

Earlier, Lee posted a photo on Instagram with the caption “Purple Beret And Purple Kobe’s For Prince Memorial Tonight In El LAY.”

The singer’s death is under investigation. He was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park complex in suburban Minneapolis on April 21.

The memorial event was reportedly organized by Prince’s ex-wives Mayte Garcia and Manuela Testolini and allowed some of his friends to remember him in word and in song.

Prince’s family recently released a statement saying they are still planning a memorial for him.

“We would like everyone to know that, contrary to previous and current reports, there has been no memorial, funeral or tribute service for Prince that was organized or authorized by the family or Paisley Park representatives,” the statement said. “Together, the family is planning an official memorial service and public event to take place in the near future.”
