A small group of pro-abortion students and faculty held a sit-in protested Monday during a Purdue Students for Life meeting and demanded that the pro-lifers apologize for their recent “Hands Up Don’t Abort” campaign.

The campaign focused on how the abortion industry targets black women and their unborn babies for abortions. Last week, the pro-life students hung posters about abortion in the black community across campus in recognition of Black History Month. The posters read “Hands up, Don’t Abort” and “Black Children are an Endangered Race” and included the website TooManyAborted.com and the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, according to the Indy Star. The Indiana college students also wrote messages such as “Womb = most dangerous place 4 black kids” in chalk on the sidewalks, the report states.

During the Monday evening meeting, the pro-abortion protesters said the pro-life group should not have used the #BlackLivesMatter phrase because it did not belong to their movement, The Journal and Courier reports. They also accused the group of not seeking out a dialogue with members of the black community on campus.

“We came to put a face to the fact that you hurt a group of people,” said protest organizer Ashley Velázquez, who leads the campus Intersectional Feminist Alliance. “We realize that was not your intent but what we want is an apology and a retraction.”

The pro-life students listened to the protesters concerns during the meeting and apologized for the manner in which they presented the facts, the report states. However, the pro-life students refused to apologize for working to protect unborn babies from abortion.

“We are going to stand behind the fact that we are against abortion and the death of an unborn child,” said Kevin Lasher, president of Purdue Students for Life. “We do recognize that we did hurt people and I think the issue lies in how we did (it) and how we got that word out. Our core beliefs remain unchanged. … (But) we are sorry for the way we put it out there.”

Lasher said the group did not talk with black students or groups on campus before launching their campaign.

Bomberger’s website, TooManyAborted.com, points out that abortion is the number-one killer of black lives in America. Government statistics back up Bomberger’s statement. In New York City alone, more black babies are aborted every year than are born alive, LifeNews reported. Numbers from a 2012 National Vital Statistics Report also reveal that African American women experience an average of 1.6 times more pregnancies than white women, but have five times more abortions in their lifetime.

Lasher previously explained the purpose of their campaign, “[The] goal of doing this is really to bring to light … how specifically the African American community, minorities in general, are being targeted by Planned Parenthood and being exploited in the name of empowering women.”

The abortion industry has historically targeting minority women and their unborn babies ever since it began in America. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business, was a racist and eugenicist who targeted African American and poor families and advocated for “sterilization and segregation” and “a cleaner race.”

Currently, 79 percent of Planned Parenthood’s surgical abortion facilities are located within walking distance of African American and/or Hispanic/Latino communities, according to research by Protecting Black Life.
