Boomotions!

Aïda Aziz Fall

I used to call boomotions all those emotions that books give us, whether we are an author or a reader. It is all of these funny, stupid or weird reactions that we can have because of a character, a dialog or just a word.

Like being a sobbing mess because Bellatrix killed Sirius, then crying because Molly killed Bellatrix (Don’t judge me, I find her kinda endearing in her way).

In this post, I will tell you about the top 5 books that have given me my strongest boomotions.

eona5. Eona by Alison Goodman

I invite you to follow me in a mythical and imperial China to meet Eon. A sixteen year old teenager that has been studying the ancient art of Dragon Magic for years hoping to be selected as apprentice to the Dragoneye. Dragoneyes are the human links to the twelve dragons that provide energy to the earth. They are elementary creatures able to handle the hua, the natural energy present in everything.

Each Dragon is related to one of the celestial animals of the power cycle : Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Cock, Dog and Pig.

Well, so Eon wanted to be a Dragoneye but is not what we could call lucky. First, Eon was crippled and was because of that, despised by the trainers and the other candidates who believe that he embodies bad luck. Second, Eon is Eona.

A girl.

That is passing herself off as a boy.

And is competing to become the Rat Dragoneye.

I don’t want to spoil so I’ll stop, here. All I can say is that this series is absolutely breathtaking, I loved both books from the first to the last page. There is everything in it: magic, fights, power, traps, suspense… and love. Especially in the second volume.

Reading Eon completely amazed me.

naruto4. Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto

Naruto is a series of mangas (Japanese Comics) that I was used to read when I was 12 or 13. It talks about a clumsy silly ninja, Naruto, whose dream is to become his village’s Hokage (The leader and protector). This mangas is just perfect. It combines humour, moral, stunning sceneries, astounding fights and…

Okay, I have to confess. The main reason why I was so obsessed with Naruto is his team mate (or at choice enemy) Sasuke.

He has been the first comics character I fell in love with. But let’s be honest, how not to? It’s impossible to resist his vulnerability almost palpable that we can feel even when he slaughters his enemies, the fragility that we find out under his mean gaze. And I’m not even talking about his eyes.

Those deep black eyes that turn into red when his sharingan awakes.

Shall I continue?

No… I think my heart won’t be able to handle it.

But seriously, I loved Naruto. I have been particularly touched by one volume –  all I remember is that it was part of the very first ones and it was about how Kakashi sensei got his sharingan after his dying team mate offered it to him while almost all his body was buried under an enormous rock. My heart literally broke into a million pieces while I was reading the last chapter.

tara duncan

3. Tara Duncan by Sophie Audouin Mamikonian

This series has 12 books so far, by a French author Sophie Audouin Mamikonian. It tells the story of a young girl Tara, with phenomenal powers who, accompanied by her friends Cal, a licensed thief, Moineau –sparrow in English- a frail girl who can turn into a ferocious beast because she is a descendant of the Beast, from the Beauty and the Beast, Fafnir, a beautiful dwarf lady over 200 years with gorgeous green eyes, Fabrice, a handsome earthling, and Robin, half elf and Tara’s lover, live the most incredible adventures.

I think I have never laughed so much in my life as when I read Tara's adventures. Definitely recommend it to you if you understand French. You won't regret it, and you'll die laughing at the expressions and insults Sophie invents.

creatures2. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

For those who haven’t yet read it, this series of 4 books is about two teenagers who fall in love, quite normal, except that the girl is an enchanting and the boy a mere mortal to whom this love could be fatal.

What I like about this book is the fact that for once, this is the girl who is the most powerful and must struggle not to kill her lover.

The thing that impressed me most in this book are the quotes that the authors use throughout the book, but especially the spell that brings back dead people to life, I found the verses so beautiful that I even memorized them:

Cruor pectoris mei, tutela tua est

Vita vitae meae, corripiens tuam, corripiens meam

Corpus Corporis mei, medulla mensque

Anima animae meae, animam nostram conecte

Cruor pectoris mei, luna mea, aestus meus

Cruor pectoris mei, fatum meum, mea salus

These books are a combination of softness, strength, love, power and melancholy. I absolutely loved the end even if it was a little sad.

harry

1. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

Which other book than Harry Potter could be the number one?

I have been fascinated and completely overcomed by the universe since the beginning. I don’t know how many times I have dreamt to receive the letter that would let me know just how amazing and special I actually was.

I planned everything. The things that I would have bought in the short cut: my magic wand –with a unicorn’s cheek-, my school books and accessories, a white cat with a sword looking pink scar in the left posterior paw…

Hermione, Harry and Ron would have been my best friends and together we would have fought and defeat you-know-who and all his army.

I remember when I was 11 (and until my early 13), I was using our mandarin tree branches to make my own wands all by myself *huge stupid proud smile*. Which was quite painful since the aforesaid branches were damned thorny. But I didn’t care, that was worth it.

I was polishing them with a kitchen knife then I used black nails varnish to paint them. Yeah I know, I was a really weird little girl. I was having fun casting spells in my room (when nobody else was there to see me). Wingardium Leviosa and Alohomora were my favourite, because they were the first ones I learned. But now, I love Nox, Expecto Patronum, Expelliarmus (<3) and Priori Incantatem…

Harry Potter has been my first literary crush.

The very first book that ever made me cry.

Harry Potter affected me for life and no other one has ever given me as much different boomotions than this one. Pleasure, amazement, fear, euphoria, anger… and sadness of course.

The sadness of seeing the characters, I had considered companions over the years, die one by one in the last volumes. Sirius, Dumbledore, Freddie, Tonks, even Snape…

These aren’t the only book that made me feel things, there are too many others such as The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, Campus by Kate Brian or Will Grayson, will grayson by John Green, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and so many more.

I’ll conclude by thanking the authors (famous or not) for all those chapters, scenes or dialogues that ever accelerate the beating of my heart, made me laugh out loud, cry or shiver.

Thank you for having given to me those unforgettable moments.

Thank you for all the boomotions.

About Aïda Aziz Fall:
Well, as far back as I can remember, I have always been passionnate about books. I can’t live without them, no joking! I looked almost like a drug addict, I wasn’t able to stay a day without reading at least one.
Then, when I was 11 I wrote my first book, it was a love story about my primary school crush Michel Chami. After that, I started writing weird poems and many unfinished stories. This year, I wrote a 608 pages, humourous story of love and adventure named “Mortel” (Mortal or Deadly in English) that I have published in Wattpad and I’m nowadays working on my new book “Rocket”, I’m in the 13h  chapter.
