Historic Los Angeles house built by hand by an architect that local legend claims was BLIND goes on sale for $600,000

This is the stunning Los Angeles home reportedly built by hand in stone by architect Elmer Reavis in 1924 who, according to urban legend, just happened to be blind. 

The two storey house, which comes with its own swimming pool, has views of the hills overlooking Los Angeles. 

According to Judy Berna, who is the property's listing agent from Coldwell Banker said: 'The house is a work of art and craftmanship. It's similar to Beethoven creating beautiful music that he could not hear.'

The house in Sunland-Tujunga neighborhood of Los Angeles, which features its own swimming pool, is on sale for $600,000 

Local legend claimed Reavis used a series of ropes and pulleys to heft massive stones into place singlehanded 

Listing agent Judy Berna said: 'The house is a work of craftmanship. It's similar to Beethoven creating music that he could not hear'

According to the legend, Reavis used a system of pulleys and ropes to construct the house single-handed, despite not being able to see what he was doing. 

The $600,000 house has exposed wooden beams, stone fireplaces and even stained glass windows. 

It is located on Samoa Avenue, in the Sunland-Tujunga neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California. 

In October 1933 Ripley's Believe it or Not reported on Reavis's improbable story, with a cartoon featuring a line drawing of the exterior of his home.  

The 1,398-square-foot main building, which has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, also comes with a swimming pool.

There is also a separate guesthouse with it's own kitchen and loft bedroom..

A fishing pond and patio with built in BBQ complete the grounds.

Reavis reportedly used a system of pulleys and rope to erect the property which is made from locally sourced arroyo stone.

According to an LA Times story from 1994 quoted local historian Mary Lou Pozzo, vice president and librarian of the Sunland-Tujunga Little Landers Historical Society. She said: 'He used a system of pulleys and ropes. And I'm told he hoisted a 1,500-pound stone above the fireplace using that same system.' 

Despite being unable to see, Reavis, without any help was able to create an amazing garden area out of the Los Angeles hills 

Inside, he moved heavy exposed wooden beams into place to support the structure and even installed an impressive library 

Reavis even included some stained glass windows into his self-built home which is north of Los Angeles near the Angeles National Forest

The house has two, wood-panelled bedrooms and a guest apartment overlooking the pool area and ornate stone fireplaces 

The house is almost 1,400 square feet, but apart from his love of building despite being blind, little is known about Elmer Reavis 

As well as two bedrooms the historic property on Samoa Avenue also features two bathrooms and impressive stone fireplaces 

Even though it has its own swimming pool, Mr Reavis did not think there was enough water outside so he excavated his own fish pond

The kitchen, which might need some new equipment, features exposed stone pillars and a tiled floor
