Jillian from Los Angeles asked

Most inspiring travel quotes?

I'm always searching for inspiring quotes that remind me of the importance of travel in my own life, and how travel makes the world more connected.

What are your all time favorite travel quotes that make you want to get out there and see the world?

'Stagnation is what I fear; adventure and failure are far, far better. Minimize regret rather than risk.' – Lady Ottoline

I live my life by this motto...

learn more about her or me ;-)

I LOVE that this is from Lady Ottoline--she has a great pub named after her in Bloomsbury, London... they have all kinds of saucy photos of her on the walls. She was quite a rebel!

There's so many great travel quotes and I love to use them in the Style Moment posts on my blog, but I've always been inspired by this one from 19th century Spanish poet, María Rosalía Rita de Castro:

"I see my path, but I don't know where it leads.  Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it."

I find most travel quotes entirely too pompous, like we're trying entirely too hard to sound reflective by recycling them. The guy who lays it all out with humor and perspective is Louis CK. He has a bit about air travel that sums up much of what I like about travel, and he absolutely slays the complainers in the process. I could pick from many of the lines in his bit, but this might be my favorite:

"You're sitting in a chair in the sky. You're like a Greek myth right now!"

Does it inspire me to somehow change the world? No. But it definitely inspires me to enjoy even what we consider the mundane part of travel ... just getting there.

“Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am. There is no mystery about why this should be so. Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, your refrigerator full of your food, your closet full of your clothes -- with all this taken away, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience. That's not always comfortable, but it is always invigorating.” - Michael Crichton, Travels

There are so many travel quotes that I love. But here are some of the best ones:

If we were meant to stay in one place, we`d have roots instead of feet.

What is life without a little risk?

Die with memories, not dreams.

Here's an easy answer :D Ironically, I wrote a blog post about my most inspiring quotes: http://giveforgranted.com/2014/03/30-of-the-best-quotes-to-inspire-the-traveler-in-you/

Just to name a few:

“Life is so much brighter when you focus on what truly matters.”

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.”

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

“The more you love your decisions, the less you need others to love them.”

“The world is a book. Those who do not travel read only one page.”

“People wait all week for Friday, all year for summer, all life for happiness. Get out there.”

“Travelling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a story teller.”

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

In Keflavik airport, Iceland, there is a quote that says 'A traveller carries no bigger weight than wisdom'. I thought that was a fitting summary of how much life experience people can gain from travelling.

From one of my favorite travel articles I've read, written by Edward Readicker-Henderson:

Looking out from the tiny island of Ofu, the tag end of American Samoa, into the ocean where Apollo astronauts splashed down after a trip into the spheres of heaven, I realize maybe the truest thing Iʼve ever written is “Whoever created the world went to a lot of trouble. It would be downright rude not to go out and see as much of it as possible.”

“A journey, after all, neither begins in the instant we set out, nor ends when we have reached our door step once again. It starts much earlier and is really never over, because the film of memory continues running on inside of us long after we have come to a physical standstill. Indeed, there exists something like a contagion of travel, and the disease is essentially incurable.” Ryszard Kapuściński 'Travels with Herodotus'

This isn't a quote per se, rather it's a song that is full of travel inspiration:  "Go Do" by Jonsi.  You can listen to the song here or read the lyrics here

Really, no more inspiration is need than those two words:  GO DO!

I know it is kind of over used/lame, but one of my favorite travel quotes is; "The journey is the destination".  It seems to sum up how I travel and therefore the way I like to travel.  Also I have a pair of Toms that have it on them that I wear a lot when I am traveling, so that helps to keep it in my mind.

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks - on your body or on your heart - are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.”

-Anthony Bourdain

“Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” -Terry Pratchett

For me it has come down to " to live is to travel, to travel is to learn how to live".

And recently an experienced wayfarer said to me: "the lesser you own the better you live on the road".
