‘Jaws 19’ Finally Gets a Trailer, 26 Years After 'Back to the Future II’

Nearly 26 years ago, moviegoers got their first glimpse of Jaws 19 — the waterlogged sequel that Marty McFly spots on a theater marquee while visiting future-set Hill Valley future in 1989’s Back to the Future II. Now, in a cheeky bit of faux-marketing, Universal has unleashed the first teaser trailer for the film, which promises that this time, it’s really personal.

According to the teaser, which is embedded above, the highly anticipated sequel will feature a whole family of sharks, presumably related to the original super-predator from Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic. It’s a fitting plot line, given that, in Back to the Future II, it’s the director’s son, Max, who directs this new film. And it’s also a very timely story: The sharks aren’t just out to wreak havoc, they’re now determined to save their disappearing ocean home from global warming.

The film marks a turn toward environmentalism and social awareness previously absent from the many, many previous Jaws sequels — all of which are made up, except for 1988’s Jaws: The Revenge, which seems was so bad, it only seems like a joke. As the trailer explains, the filmmakers have largely (and desperately) tried to attach themselves passing pop-culture fads, from cyber warfare (Jaws 7), robotic sharks (Jaws 8), the Cold War (Jaws 15), and even erotic fiction (Jaws 19). The latest installment will likely boast impressive new 3D technology, and will presumably premiere exclusively at Holomax theaters.
