Star Trek fans, at least one piece of technology depicted in the seminal series is finally here.
Announced at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con, The Original Series Communicator Handset is a bluetooth-enabled accessory that allows a person to receive calls and listen to music from their smartphone. The device is being manufactured by a firm called the Wand Company, which apparently took 3D scans of the original hero prop used in the show to create the mass produced replica.
At $149.95, this admittedly narrow in scope accessory is expensive, though it does look decently well-made. It’s made of pressed die cast metal, machined aluminum and textured ABS. It also comes with a stand that enables wireless charging.
It’s not clear how a person is supposed to call someone with the communicator, but true to its depiction in the series, flipping the communicator open answers a call.
The accessory starts shipping next January, which means that it will become available just in time for Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. Now if only we were a bit closer to the utopian society depicted in the series and subsequent movies.
