How to Prepare for AC Season

Spring is officially here! The Getzschman Heating & Cooling team wants to help you prepare for the warmer weather that we all love. We put together this handy checklist of tasks that you will want to accomplish before your AC unit is on full time.

Inspect Your Outdoor Unit

During the harsh winter months, your AC unit sits outside, bearing the cold all season. Be sure to check the unit for any components that look out of place or damaged. Check the panels, which enclose the electrical connections, for safety. You can also check to see if there is a buildup of dirt on the outside of the unit. This dirt can actually block air flow, which will make your air conditioner work harder. And when it has to work harder, it costs you more money in your cooling bills.

Remove Debris from Your AC

Omaha-area homeowners will also want to remove any debris near the air conditioning unit. Why? Things like mulch, tree branches, and piles of leaves can block the airflow or interrupt the transfer of heat from your condenser coils, making it more difficult for your home to cool properly.

Replace Air Filters

It is recommended that your heating and cooling system’s filters are replaced on a monthly basis, or quarterly at the very least. When your system is in use, this filter collects dust and debris before pushing air through your home.

If the filter is full, it cannot collect this dust and debris, meaning your system won’t work as efficiently as it should be and might be pushing that debris into your air. With newer systems, too much dust and debris in a filter can even cause the system to shut down.

Clean the Supply Vents and Return Grills

Don’t forget about those supply vents and return grills placed throughout your home! We recommend checking that they are open and that they are not blocked by furniture or rugs. The GForce team also recommends vacuuming these vents and grills to remove any pet dander or dust that may have accumulated throughout the past couple of months!

Schedule an Air Conditioner Tune-Up

Just like you change the oil in your vehicle, you need routine maintenance for your home’s air conditioner. This ensures that it will work efficiently all season long. When a technician is tuning up your unit they will also check the parts of your air conditioner which will help prevent breakdowns in the heat of the summer. In addition, some equipment manufacturers require regular maintenance for their warranties, so you don’t want to be in for an expensive surprise if your air conditioner ever needs a repair.
