Gun control advocates salute Clinton

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton will address gun control advocates Thursday as she looks to distinguish herself from rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.).

Clinton is set to receive an award from the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence for her “longstanding leadership in the fight to reduce gun violence” at a ceremony in New York.

Gun control groups are excited by Clinton’s campaign.

The Brady Campaign has a long history with Clinton, who as first lady helped push through the original background check law for guns.

This is one issue where Clinton has been able to move to the left of Sanders. Last month, her campaign released a list of executive orders she would take to crack down on gun violence, if elected president.

She and other Democrats have pushed for Congress to close a loophole that allows criminals to purchase firearms online and at gun shows without going through a background check.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Brady President Dan Gross will also speak at the awards ceremony.
