7. Always lock doors and windows

Keep windows locked when you are not home, when you go to bed at night and when they are not in use. If you like to sleep with a window open at night, install window locks that only allow the window to open a few inches.

You should also keep your garage door down, even during the day. Having the garage door open invites thieves inside to look around. It gives them quick, easy access inside your home. 8. Change the locks as necessary

If you've just purchased a home from someone, your first order of business should be to meet the locksmith at your new home.
