For Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, mornings start early — like 5 a.m. early.

An early wake-up time calls for a solid morning routine. Vergara, 43, shared hers with Yahoo Health during an event for the new Ninja Coffee Bar, as well as what keeps her energized throughout the day and the big thing that’s kept her from making workout excuses.

The first thing she does when she wakes up: “My morning routine, like every Colombian, is to wake up and crave coffee,” Vergara says. “So that’s like my first thing, and then I can figure out breakfast or working out or anything else.”

How she takes her coffee: Black. “I like it without anything. It needs to be really good brewed coffee. I don’t hide it with anything, I don’t put milk or anything. I drink it black without sugar.”

Her favorite healthy breakfast: When she’s on set, she’s at the mercy of whatever is available there. But her go-tos include egg whites, oatmeal, toast, and peanut butter sandwiches.

Workouts: Morning or night? She prefers to work out in the morning, but that can be tough on days when she has to be up at 5 a.m. to film. But on the weekends, she’s an a.m. exerciser.

Her preferred method of working out: The Megaformer, which she describes as “a very intense Pilates [machine].” She also works out in the gym that her fiancé Joe Manganiello — star of Magic Mike XXL and True Blood and a fitness expert in his own right — built in her home. Now “I don’t have excuses,” Vergara says. “So, it used to be, ‘Oh, I don’t have time,’ or ‘It’s raining.’ Now I get to work out because the gym is right in my house.”

On how Manganiello has influenced her workouts: While the two don’t work out together — “he does a very different workout,” Vergara explains — she does pick his brain from time to time for his fitness know-how. He even recommended one of the trainers Vergara works with.

How Vergara keeps up her energy throughout the day: At this point, it’s no surprise — coffee! Without it, “I get a headache the whole day and I’m miserable,” she says. She drinks it in the morning mainly, but if it’s a long day, she’ll also sip some after lunch.

The one healthy thing she makes sure to do every day: “I try to drink lots of water. I think that’s superimportant because you feel sick if you’re not hydrated.”
