This is a book of 90 readings tracing the theme of resilience through the Sermon on the Mount. Some might call it a devotional or simply a book of meditations but how one defines it doesn’t really matter. It is a book that challenges the reader to invest time in Jesus words to gain understanding and with the Spirit’s help move from head knowledge to action.

The book came about as a result of Sheridan walking through a season when he read the Sermon on the Mount every day. He began journaling and then writing some blog posts on his reflections.

There are six sections that generally follow the three chapters of the Sermon: Your Invitation, Your Calling, Your Relationships, Your Practices, Your Choices and Your Resilient Life.

Each reading starts with a verse, from the Sermon or other, a page and half of contemplation using a real life example or one from the Bible, and then ends with two questions to ponder and answer.

It is a book to be read slowly to allow Jesus’ words combined with Sheridan’s reflections to percolate. To read it too quickly would miss much of the power of its content.

I particularly appreciated section six: Your Resilient Life. Living a Jesus-Shaped life leads to resilience especially when life is tough. Voysey outlines four factors that researchers have identified as leading to human resilience: Emotional fitness, Family fitness, Social Fitness and Spiritual fitness. None of these are that surprising. Positive emotions, healthy relationships, bodies and minds plus the meaning and purpose that comes from serving someone greater than ourselves.

Besides the quality reflection of Jesus’ words, the one aspect of these readings that sets it apart is the challenge to do something about them. As Voysey sums up at the end:

“… a resilient life is made by putting his [Jesus] words into practice.”

The Sermon is a guide to live a different life, be “change agents to the world”, and Sheridan’s readings have challenged me to realise that an intimate walk with Jesus will better enable me to live such a life.

Highly recommended.

This is a collection of devotions on the Sermon on the Mount. Sheridan is a master writer of devotions: his tone is pastoral without being sentimental; his illustrations are rooted in real life, and he digs deep into the word without being over-intellectual. It is the classic devotional style: a verse at the beginning to reflect upon, with a short but meaty commentary, and questions or quotes at the end. It doesn’t simply go through the Sermon on the Mount, but dots around using several themes in the sermon. It is a thoughtful and enjoyable journey, and great if you’re looking for devotional material.

Resilient-your invitation to a Jesus-shaped life is one of those devotional books that you actually can't put down and end up reading continuously within one sitting. Every ‘chapter' pulls you in and either has you raising your hand in agreement or finally making sense of what you've been feeling/thinking and reading in the past.

Based on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount; Resilient takes you on a journey of 90 readings with stories, scripture, insights from the sermon and life pondering questions.

To bounce back from emotional, physical & spiritual storms we need resilience and quoting the book; ‘the blessed life is a resilient life, at its core is a heart for God'.

Personally battling inner turmoil with grief and faith struggles for the past few years this book has repaired my relationship with God, finally hearing his voice again and knowing he'll use my strengths, seek my talents, let my light shine and shape my future into that blessed resilient life. It's really opened my eyes and heart to all aspects of my life and made me listen to that voice (God's) that perhaps I'd stopped hearing as my own inner voices became too loud.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly for anyone struggling, anyone starting their voyage with God, devotional readers or just anyone who wants to be spiritually nourished. It is beautifully written; Sheridan uses his own life experiences, humour and knowledge to take you on a flowing journey of self discovery. An emotional rollercoaster of a ride that will lead you to resilience and a stronger relationship with God.

WOW - this book is incredible - this author is honorable and is intelligent and interesting. I cannot tell you how moved I was. I found myself crying and didn't realize it until I needed a Kleenex. I felt what he had to say was mammoth to those who read it and life changing. He talked to about a mighty GOD and how we can come to HIM and why we should. He talked about JESUS and the beatitudes and the great commission. How this changed peoples lives including some prisoners lives in "The Rock" - it was amazing. Ya'll you would be missing out on a life changing book if you do not get this, this is a book that is for new Christians and those who have been Christians for a long time - I have been one my whole life - I am a pastors daughter and I was told several things - and one main important thing was that you do not take something that someone - a preacher or anyone that is telling you something - without Scripture to back it up you do not believe them - and two if they do give Scripture to back it up you make sure that you read the Scripture around it to make sure that they are not twisting the Scripture around it to fit what they are trying to teach you. Well this author is genuine - they backed everything up he was teaching me with Scripture and that Scripture was genuine - not twisted. I was very impressed, because most books the author twists things to fit what they are trying to get across. I loved this book. I received this book to read and to give you an honest review.

I was given this book as part of my Christmas gift by my daughter and son-in-law. It happens that they attend the same church as, and know as a friend the author, Sheridan Voysey. They felt certain that I would both enjoy and be challenged by "resilient". The book, focusing on The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 - 7), takes the form of 90 short chapters, ideal as a daily devotional for three months... or so I thought. I have finished it in 39 days and feel I must return to the beginning.

On the back cover is written:

"Rich with stories and deep with insight, Resilient is designed to recalibrate your callings, relationships, spiritual practices, and life choices. Join Sheridan Voysey in following the One who promises this. Though the rain comes in torrents and the winds beat against you, you will stand, not collapse. You will be resilient."

I was drawn into Sheridan's easy narrative, supporting stories and experiences, explanations and Spirit-inspired interpretation of the Sermon. As is evident, one chapter a day was not enough for me! I remain particularly challenged by the questions he poses at the end of each short chapter - they search deeply into my life and faith.

I commend this small volume to everyone, wherever you are in your Christian walk.

Thank you Sheridan.

‘Resilient’ is a book of short devotionals, but don’t let that fool you: rather than being self-contained pockets of thought, these short sections go on a journey and build up a picture of a Jesus-shaped life in today’s world. And because it’s Sheridan Voysey writing it - erstwhile radio show host, popular podcaster and speaker - the book is also an invitation to an ongoing conversation on what the Sermon on the Mount is really saying about life in the 21st century, and it pops with ideas. I wasn’t far into the book before realising that I was going to need to make sure that I had a Bible, my journal and Google to hand to keep up with the constant fascinating references, quotations, personalities and anecdotes that Sheridan uses to bring light and shade to those familiar words of Christ so that they stand out in unexpected 3D, like a Magic Eye book for the soul.
And of course, being Sheridan, it won’t stop there - there is to be a guide, and videos, and more podcasts and more discussion so that Resilient can become an important resource for homegroups and churches too. Don’t miss it!

“We don’t develop resilience only by hearing or reading about it.
We develop resilience through action.”
Sheridan Voysey, from the chapter entitled: From Words to Deeds

I found Sheridan Voysey’s book “Resilient” arrived among my study resources at just the right time for me. It has been while living through a challenging season in my personal life that God has been using Resilient to deepen the resilience I hadn’t realised I had… or needed!

The short devotional chapters are easy to read and easy to focus on without feeling overwhelmed, which is particularly helpful for anyone who is currently going through a tough season and just needs a moment to hear God’s voice.

Sheridan’s style of weaving story-telling with revelation and insight makes this is really easy book to read, and I know at some point, when this season has past, I will be reading it again for a more in-depth study into the challenge of Jesus’ sermon on the Mount. Especially as at the end of each chapter, Sheridan has written a couple of questions to help us apply the word of God into our daily lives. I can see that this would also be valuable material for small group study.

The newest and freshest devotional around!!

This book is a great devotional based on Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. It is split up into 90 "chapters" or devotionals, each starting with a scripture verse, then followed by Sheridan's commentary, and finishes up with a couple of questions to get you thinking and digging deeper into the Word.

Sheridan's style of writing makes this book easy to read, whilst providing great insight and food for thought. You can read it straight through like a book, but I feel you'll get more out of it by reading it as a devotional and taking some time to ponder on each chapter.

Well written, easy to read and a great take on the Sermon on the Mount. Buy the book and start reading. I'm sure you won't be sorry you did.

What ever your beliefs in life, this book will take you further, and will challenge your thinking. You will gain a new perspective on life. History proves that Jesus of Nazareth walked this earth, and whatever status we give him, we know he spoke words of power - and I am thankful that some can "interpret" his words into our culture, relevant for 2015, better than I can. I appreciate good books, like this one, to expand His teachings into my life. I often think that radio and TV interviewers (like Sheridan) have some common ground with Counsellors (of which I am one) in that they ask probing questions that help us go a little bit further into ourselves, and break out something that we were not fully aware of yet. This book does just that - like an interviewer, like a counsellor - some challenging digs, that for if we are ready, we will benefit. Love is the law behind laws, as Sheridan reminds us. Buy this book in multiple copies - for yourself and those close to you...........
