Signaling a potential awards-season campaign, Sony Pictures Classics will release the drama “The Meddler,” starring Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne and J.K. Simmons, in North America.

Sony Classics did not disclose the release date for “The Meddler,” directed by Lorene Scafaria (“Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”) from her own script. The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions bought worldwide rights to the film prior to the start of the production and will distribute internationally.

Sarandon plays a recent widow and eternal optimist who moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter, played by Byrne. Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”), Jerrod Carmichael and Michael McKean also star.

“The Meddler” is produced by Joy Gorman Wettels of Anonymous Content. Sarandon exec produces with Anonymous’ Paul Green and Steve Golin.
