The Federal Government has announced changes to the Motor Vehicle Standards Act which, if passed into law, will allow private individuals to import a new car without the need to have them comply with ADRs.
At this stage the changes do not take effect until 2018 for private importers. They are not without their own complexities. And also mean that private importers must assume some risk regarding issues like warranty, recalls, and the like.
The devil's in the detail — and there's considerable detail to still be fleshed out.
motoring.com.au broke the news of the changes and since then has published a number of news items related to parallel importing.
To help consumers get up to speed on the changes, however, we've gathered all of content into one place. We will continue to monitor the situation and post additional links to this page as the story unfolds.
