John Cook started his own business with one gas station in southern Oklahoma four decades ago. Today, Petroleum Wholesale, based in The Woodlands, Texas, distributes fuel in nine states to more than 150 branded locations, plus unbranded sites and governmental entities. It also operates 40 c-stores or travel centers and leases space to another 80.

I had the opportunity to visit with John Cook, president and CEO of Petroleum Wholesale, and he stated that diversification is a trend he is seeing in the industry. One of those trends is the move within the travel center industry to offer biodiesel blended fuel.

Cook added biodiesel blended fuel to his product offering in 2013 because his competitors were offering it. So, it didn’t take John long to realize he needed to get into biodiesel to stay competitive.

Today up to 95 percent of Petroleum Wholesale’s locations offer biodiesel. Cook says stores start at a B10 blend, move up to B15 a couple of months later, and then B20 a couple of months after that. And the company has heard no complaints from customers.

According to Cook there’s no downside to biodiesel, and a lot of advantages to it. The benefits include state incentives such as an exemption from the diesel fuel tax in several states, price advantages over traditional diesel, biodiesel being a renewable fuel and its clean-burning properties.

“It’s about economics,” Cook says. “And there are some very good incentives out there to utilize biodiesel.”
