This year Pantone has given all designers who love to be on trend and play with color a special gift, by having made the unprecedented decision to name a blend of two shades for its color of the year 2016. Rose Quartz (Pantone 13-1520) and Serenity (Pantone 15-2919) are stunning shades with a huge range of applications all on their own, but together they combine to be something truly exciting.
Pantone reasoned in their decision-making that they wanted a color that would counteract the stresses and anxieties the world now faces on an almost daily basis. Wars, terrorism and climate change dominate our newsfeeds, so comfort is often in short supply. The colors of the year combine to offer just that: pink is known to be the color of romance, warmth, and feminine care, making us feel loved and nurtured. Light blue is a color of calm and peace, which will help alleviate the anxiety that's all around us.
But Rose Quartz and Serenity aren't all cuddles and sweetness. They also combine to combat heavily entrenched stereotyping that put them into eternally separated gender niches. The combination works to break common conceptions that pink can be nothing but a color for little girls' princess parties and blue can only ever denote the arrival of a baby boy. Honoring these two shades side by side reminds us of the endless possibilities they inhabit, and shows us how beautiful they are when combined, contrasted, or even blended into soft shades of gray.
