Watch: How to Project ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in a Humongous IMAX Dome

With $906 million and counting at the domestic box office, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is simply the biggest film of all time in America, and a blockbuster of this size demands a screen of similar astonishment. That’s where Brian Elmore comes in.

As the IMAX projectionist at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama, Elmore is responsible with the herculean task of screening “The Force Awakens” in an IMAX dome where the screen wraps 180 degrees around you and stands at five stories high and four stories wide. But that’s not even the biggest part — the project weighs two tons and needs an elevator to be lifted. 

The John W. Woods IMAX Dome at the McWane Science Center was one of only 15 theaters in the entire country that screened the blockbuster on film, and to capture the process, filmmaker Denzale Butler went into the projection booth to see just how this monster task gets done. If there’s one that’s for certain, it’s that the only thing bigger than “The Force Awakens” itself is projecting it.
