The key to developing a new app, and having it stand out in today’s crowded app stores, is making it functional and engaging to your audience or customer so they actually want to use it. Whether it’s simplifying the interface to support easy transactions, or providing fun, reactive and unique interfaces, engaging your users in the right way, for their given use-case, is essential.

Two new apps are doing just that. They have shown that with the proper research and insights, you can develop an app that suits your audience’s needs.

Walgreens and CVS invest in practical digital pharmacy

When it comes to customer needs being fulfilled, major pharmacy retailers are providing that by focusing on consumers’ everyday tasks and immediate needs.  According to Brian Tilzer, CVS’s chief digital officer: “The work we’re doing is cool, but our focus is on what’s valuable, not what’s cool.”

  • Making people’s lives easier is a goal of new digital pharmacy apps. This allows customers to fill prescriptions with a swipe.
  • Simplify the approach to app design. These functional apps don’t need fancy design trends, they need to work properly.
  • Remember that people carry their smartphone or mobile device so plan for in-store use as well.

On the other side of this practical approach to mobile apps is the fun and playful side. People want to use their mobile apps for entertainment.

Apple Watch apps allow interaction with other Apple devices

bowlingBowling Central from Rolocule Games is the first of its kind to exploit new interactions between Apple Watches, iPhones and Apple TV.  Taking advantage of the recently enhanced Apple Watch developer interface, the game leverages the accelerometer in the watch to provide a Wii-like bowling experience, simply by moving your arm.  Design tips Rolocule include:

  • Let people enjoy themselves using their mobile apps. Design an app that immerses the user into the experience.
  • Entertainment apps should not stand alone but rather have the ability to interact and utilize other devices.
  • This opens the opportunity for other developers to see the future potential of Apple Watch apps and this cross-pollination of devices.
