Selections come from Life of Cats, an altogether fascinating new exhibition by Japan Society: Two centuries before LOLcats, and more than a century before felines became muses to Western literature and art, Japanese artists anthropomorphized cats, which arrived in Japan on ships transporting sacred Buddhist scriptures from China.
