Cheap Trick and Salt-n-Pepa headline Arts, Beats & Eats

An eclectic line-up of acts from all genres and generations will provide the soundtrack for this year’s Arts, Beats and Eats festival in downtown Royal Oak.

The 18th annual Labor Day weekend street festival hosts high-energy classic rockers Cheap Trick and the Guess Who, plus late 1980s, early ’90s hitmakers Salt-N-Pepa. More ’90s radio hits will be heard from rock band (and summer festival staple) Gin Blossoms.

For country fans, organizers have booked “Young Love” singer Kip Moore, along with James Otto and Lucy Angel. The main stage is rounded out by Young the Giant, Puddle of Mudd, tribute act Beatlemania and Neon Trees. The latter debuted in 2010 with the alt-rock hit song “Animal.”

Local acts are peppered in, too, including troubadour Stewart Francke, deaf rapper Sean Forbes, rock band Kaleido and more. Additional local acts of all stripes — 200 entertainers in all — can be heard on six other stages.

New to the “eats” portion of the festival is food from creative Royal Oak restaurant Cafe Muse, Greek eatery KouZina and Salad Sensations from Somerset Collection. This year’s offerings will have a focus on barbecue as well, with food from Famous Dave’s, Bert’s Market Place, Lockhart’s BBQ and Victory Smokehouse.

In conjunction with Beaumont Hospital, menus will be labeled to point out which plates are gluten-free, sugar-free, low in carbs or fat, or vegan.

Arts, Beats and Eats, which organizers say attracted 360,000 people last year, also boasts a juried art show with 135 artist booths, a kids’ area, and fitness challenges, including a 5K/10K walk/run on Sept. 5 to benefit Rock CF and Life Time Foundation.
