A gaming-style app in which players have to navigate a forest kingdom is to be used by a leading employer in its recruitment process to identify young people who can think creatively.

Deloitte, the professional services company, will initially use Firefly Freedom to help hire 200 apprentices. If it works, all applicants to its recruiting programmes, which hire 1,500 people a year, will have to tackle the game, in which players need to find fireflies in the village of Lightopia to generate light.

Shooting imaginary balls may not seem an obvious qualification to work as an accountant, auditor or financial adviser, but this is no ordinary game.
