Organizing Your Day

Schedule It: Some people work best with a strict schedule. Get up at 6 am, eat breakfast at 7am, etc.  If you think this will work for you, sit down and make a list of everything you need to do in a day, then plan when the best time for each thing is.  If you have multiple children you need to schedule around, I highly recommend trying out ScheduleBreeze.com. It is an online tool that lets you make a schedule for each person in your house, with drag & drop scheduling. I used it when the twins were little & a schedule was the only way I could make sure everything got done every day and that I actually got some sleep.  If you are a pen & paper person, they also have a workbook with example schedules called Managers of Their Homes. I used the book & charts until they came up with the online tool.

Repeat It: If a rigid schedule doesn't work for you, creating daily routines can help you accomplish what you need to and etch out some time to tackle the chaos in your home. By doing the same things every day when you wake up and before you go to bed, you'll quickly turn your routines into habits with repetition. FlyLady.net is a great resource for creating routines that evolve as you grow.  Amazon has quite a few books on creating a routine that works for you, many are free with Kindle Unlimited (get a free 30 day trial). S.H.E. (Sidetracked Home Executives) is another resource similar to FlyLady that helps you build your own routine, using a home journal. I currently use routines to keep me on task & take about my routines in my Speed Cleaning Tips.

Wing It: If you can't stand schedules or routines, I understand.  It can sound like it would be a bit stifling to your creativity and feel restricting.  A good planner is your best friend in this case – Well Planned Day is my personal favorite, but I know some people who can't live without their Erin Condren planner.  Keep track of what needs done each week in the weekly notes section & record any appointments on the day/time you need to be there.  Use your smartphone calendar alarms to remind you the day before & at least 2 hours before you need to leave.  It is possible to stay on task without a schedule or routine, but I highly recommend you give one of those methods a try.  I found it to be freeing to use routines, because I get what I need to done without the stress of rushing at the last minute.

  1. I love organization, but when it comes to trying to organize my day I fail! I just need to come up with a schedule and stick to it.
