Often we are using Google to conduct searches for classroom content or asking our students to search Google for articles relative to a project. You are likely already filtering results using SafeSearch, but have you used the Reading Level filter to adjust the results even further?

It is quick, already built into Google search, and will make a difference when working with diverse learners who aren't always the first to admit they don't understand the content they're finding.

Here's how it works:

1. Head to Google.com and type in your search keywords.

2. Click on “Search Tools”

3. Click on the “All results” dropdown then click “Reading level”.

When you click on Reading level, it filters the search results into categories: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced. Clicking on the category will show only the results that fit that level of reading.

Having this functionality allows students the ability to advocate for their own learning, curtailing it to their needs and ensuring that they are developing a fundamental understanding of the content they are responsible for learning.
