‘kitchen by thomas’ is the latest installment in the german porcelain manufacturer rosenthal’s popular collection. building upon the 130 year heritage of the company, as well the previous ranges by konstantin grcic and stefan diez, hong kong-based office for product design — led by tomas rosén and nicol boyd — expands the traditional dinner table to include various domestic settings, functions, and materials.

the collection is based around familiar archetypes and shapes

the line exhibits a balanced respect for existing archetypes, but isn’t short on fresh ideas. each item is designed to stand alone or as part of the unified group, which is defined by aspects such common expressions as shared profiles, modular footprints, and characteristic wooden batons. great care has been taken to materially unite functional requirements with tactile and emotional qualities. the result is a considered combination of porcelain, glass, beech wood, stainless steel, and silicone.

at over twenty pieces, ‘kitchen by thomas’ is no small collection. the line includes kitchen utensils, salt and pepper grinders, oil and vinegar cruets, bread and cheese boards, butter dish, parmesan grater, mortar and pestles, juicer, folding trivet, and a self-watering herb pot. the result comes after three years of exploration and close collaboration between rosenthal and office for product design. subsequently, the first stages of the line were released at frankfurt’s ambiente fair.
