The success of Chinese researchers in genetically modifying several human embryos could be a “tipping point” on the path to producing designer babies, scientists say.

In the research, revealed last month in The Times, the Chinese team edited the genes in embryos obtained from fertility clinics, using techniques that could be copied around the world.

Such procedures have the potential, at least in theory, to revolutionise medicine by eliminating genetic diseases, and lowering the risk of others that are partially genetic — such as some forms of breast cancer. They could also be used to alter more personal traits such as intelligence, with results that would not only be hard to predict but that would also persist across generations.
