Meanwhile, in one of many alternate futures...
Light filters through Stephan's eyelids. The air is filled with muted beeps.
His throat feels raw. And... full.
He chokes—eyes suddenly wide open.
His body is stretched out on a Health-e-Bed, arms sprouting tubes.
He reaches for his face and feels another tube in his mouth.
A Medibot stands beside him. No syn-skin covers the metallic arm that reaches for his face. Stephan tries to scream, but makes no sound.
A harassed-looking paradoctor appears by the bed.
"You're awake," she says, overriding the Medibot and removing the tube herself.
"Sorry there's only ’bots. We just can't get the staff."
