Why this petition matters
Indianapolis Residents: The City's agreement with Covanta to combine its trash incineration with a “recycling” program is not a done deal. A lawsuit is currently pending before the Indiana Court of Appeals. Covanta is also applying for a state permit and the permit request has been challenged by several parties.
YOUR VOICE IS MORE IMPORTANT NOW THAN EVER! PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION TODAY!
Regardless of what happens with the lawsuit, Mayor-elect Hogsett will have the ability to move our city in a new and greener direction.
The City's proposed “recycling” plan--having Indianapolis residents mix their recycling with their trash--will set recycling back for decades. Covanta, the local trash incinerator, plans to build a facility to sort this trash/recycling mixture, and recycle only a small amount of the recyclable material. Mixing trash with recyclables creates significant contamination, resulting in much lower quantity and quality of recycled materials. The companies—many of them Indiana companies--that rely on recycled feedstock need clean material and are very concerned.
You can find more information about other problems with this proposal here. To learn more about the history of this issue, read the March 25, 2015 Indy Star article, September 30, 2015 Resource Recycling Op-Ed, and the November 8, 2015 NUVO article.
Clean recycling is a jobs engine that saves energy and conserves resources. Other first-class cities around the nation offer the gold-standard in recycling—free, curbside pickups for all residents. Within Marion County, Lawrence, Beech Grove and Speedway offer first-class, CLEAN, curbside recycling for all residents. New resources make it possible for Indianapolis to offer the same.
