Ground broken on £30m student accommodation project

THE University of Hull has seen the start of work on a £30m student residential development.

Sewell Construction, which was founded in Hull, has been appointed as the main contractor on the build which will be able to house 560 students.

The site is located near the North campus entrance on Inglemire Lane has been designed in partnership with GSS Architect.

The project will be managed by Martin Standley, a Hull-born project manager who recently led the development of the University-sponsored Thomas Ferens Academy for Sewell.

Mr Standley said: “It’s fantastic to be working on this flagship scheme for the University of Hull.

“It’s on the doorstep for our project team and we’re all very proud to be supporting the University in its ambition to provide world class accommodation, to attract the highest calibre of students to our city.”

The University’s director of estates, Chris Paget, said: “The new proposed residences will help us to create a positive living and learning environment.

“The project is one of several significant investments being undertaken at the University; it comes less than a year after the completion the £27.4 million Brynmor Jones Library redevelopment, and the renovation of Middleton Hall is also currently underway.

“This makes it such an exciting time for the University, and for the city, as we move closer towards 2017 and an exhilarating year of culture.”

The development is set to accommodate students starting in 2016.
