NBC drama gets Chinese remake

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is working on a Chinese remake of NBC’s Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning comedy drama Mad About You.

The show, which ended in the US in 1999 after seven seasons, is being reworked for a Chinese audience by Huaso Film/TV Digital Production, the joint-venture formed by SPT and CCTV6’s HuaCheng Pictures, and Shanghai-based prodco Croton Media.

Production is scheduled to start in early 2015 on the local version, with Huaso and Croton currently casting the two lead roles and supporting characters. A broadcaster is yet to be attached.

The series follows a city-dwelling newlywed couple who attempt to maintain their marital bliss despite the challenges thrown up by their careers, families and friends.

Huaso has already produced Chinese versions of other SPT scripted and non-scripted formats, including talkshow Dr. Oz, as well as competition series Raid the Cage and Dancing Nation.

Dai Huang, SPT’s executive director of sales and international distribution, and acting executive director of international production in Asia, said the story about a young couple trying to balance their lives in the big city would be “especially relevant to local audiences.”

SPT has recently reworked a Lat Am version of hit AMC show Breaking Bad for Spanish audiences and agreed a deal in May with Mexican giant Televisa to coproduce 12 Spanish-language tele series over the next five years.

It’s also worked on local versions of US sitcom Married… with Children in 12 territories and adapted CBS’s Everybody Loves Raymond in five countries.
