IN THIS EDITION OF THE TURKEY GOBBLE...

NEWS

Hi everyone,

It may be nearly winter but there is no hibernating here at Lactic Turkey Headquarters!

It is with great excitement that we welcome Mrs Lactic Turkey officially to the team! Otherwise known as Madeleine, Mrs Lactic Turkey recently quit her day job to join us here in the office and out at events. Madeleine has always been part of the team working hard on racepacks, admin and on-the-day dogsbody at events. Now she will be able to devote much more time to making all of our Lactic Turkey Events just that bit bigger and better. Make sure you introduce yourself to Madeleine at events as she knows lots of your names but not many of your faces! She'll be the one with the bright orange Lactic Turkey Event Director top....but without the beard.

Entries are coming in thick and fast for The Double Rainbow on 13th June. 46, 25 or 17km trail run options held just south of Rotorua. It incorporates private farmland, stunning bush trails and an ascent (or two or four) up Rainbow Mountain to give some of the most amazing views in the region. It is a not-to-be-missed event that has something to offer trail runners of all levels. See the website or below for more details.

Our annual Schools Sustainability Series is well underway with two secondary schools events already completed. The next Junior schools (year 5 - 8) event is in just two short weeks on the 26th of May at Long Bay Regional Park. If you are a parent or a teacher then have a look at more info about this either on our website or below and enter a team or two from your school.

We are super excited to announce a couple of brand new events this year, just a couple for now ...with more to come!

First is the Glen Eden 10 Miler. The Glen Eden 10 Miler is one of the oldest road running events in Auckland. This year in its 51st year of running, the event is on 21st June 2015.  Lactic Turkey Events are lending a hand and managing the event for the Glen Eden Athletic and Harriers Club. Enjoy the beautiful Waitakeres in the famous 10 mile (16.1km) road run, or try the 5 or 2km fun runs. See below for more info.

Second is the Toughen Up Obstacle Run. This is a mud/obstacle fun run in urban bush in Green Bay, West Auckland. The event is owned by Sport Waitakere and developed/managed by ourselves and will be an excellent way to test your fitness in this challenging and fun event. So save 23rd August in your calendar for a fun day out for all the family. The website is under development while we await a few final details but keep an eye on our newsletters and Facebook page for updates. See below for a little more info.

A little known fact is that Lactic Turkey Events provides team building and leadership opportunities for corporates and school groups. We use our famous Rogaine/Adventure Race-with-mystery-activities format with a few special warm up activities to kick off. Recently we have worked with Laingholm Primary School and Marist College and our corporate groups have included ATEED (division of Auckland Council) and NZ Mens Black Sticks. See below for more details or email info@lacticturkey.co.nz to find out more.

On 3rd May we had our first ever Arahoe Mud Run.  Lactic Turkey vents were approached by some parents of the Arahoe School to help organise an event as a fundraiser.  The idea was to create something to build community spirit, foster family fun and raise funds for Arahoe Primary School.  Well after the inaugural event we certainly achieved the goals, with a successful event with 411 entrants and a whole heap of fun had by everyone!  Check out some of the photos from the event.

Cheers and looking forward to seeing you at an event soon.

Shaun and the rest of the Lactic Turkey Team

SCHOOLS SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES

Lactic Turkey Events together with the Auckland Council organises a series of events for schools each year. There are two categories - Junior (years 5-8) and Senior (years 9 and above). These events are a great day out for school teams and have been growing each year. Events are hosted at various regional parks around Greater Auckland from Shakespeare to Muriwai to Arataki to Ambury. Each venue brings its own special taonga and issues. Activities vary with the different venues to help students understand the specific sustainability needs in each environment.

The Junior series begins on 26 May at Long Bay Regional Park. There are still entries available.

See if a teacher at your kid's school is interested in taking a few teams or even work with your school to organise to take a school team yourself. Lactic Turkey Events can help your school with all the paperwork if needed.

Each race is for teams of 4 students who will compete in a 2  hour event, which includes a mix of running/walking, navigation and sustainability based activities.  Teams will navigate to as many checkpoints as they can, collecting points for each checkpoint visited.  To earn extra points teams can complete sustainability themed activities which will require some research and teamwork.  Examples of activities could be to identify native bird calls, match a pest to the correct trap used or make something from flax.

This innovative event aims to help students:

  • Foster a sense of kaitiakitanga for our Auckland Regional Park, raise awareness of how special they are, the threats posed to them and how students can make a difference by taking positive action for the environment.
  • Work together as a team developing their key competencies
  • Enjoy and value the ‘ecological sustainability’ of our regional parks.

Cost per student per race is $10.00

Check out the website for more information

TOUGHEN UP OBSTACLE RUN
This is a mud/obstacle fun run in urban bush in Green Bay, West Auckland. The event is owned by Sport Waitakere and developed/managed by Lactic Turkey Events.  This will be an excellent way to test your fitness in this challenging and fun event.

The event is made up of one or two laps of the 3km course which weaves throughout the grounds of the Motu Moana property. With a range of obstacles over the course including downhill and uphill mudslides, cargo net, balance beam, tyre run and waterbomb tower everyone is certain to be crossing the finish line tired, muddy and grinning from ear to ear!

So gather up your friends and family and save the date 23rd August in your calendar. Keep an eye on our newsletters and facebook for more information.

ROGAINE SERIES

Start getting your teams together for Lactic Turkey's annual Rogaine Series. The first will be on ...... at ...... This isn't just a run but an adventure. The finish area of these events is always filled with smiling happy people!

What is this rogaine thing you ask? Teams of 2 to 5 compete in either a 3 or 1 1/2 hour event. They navigate to as many checkpoints on a map as they choose in whichever order they choose. Points are gained at each checkpoint. Teams must return to the finish area within the time allowed or they will lose points. This structure means any body can enter - young old, newbie or elite and all have a challenge. Our rogaines have an added twist - teams can earn extra points by completing mystery activities along the way. SO teamwork, strategy, brains and brawn are all needed!

CORPORATE AND SCHOOLS TEAM BUILDING

We take pride in delivering quality events to everyone, events that anyone can participate in, no matter there experience or fitness level. This also underpins our Corporate Team Building and School Leadership programmes.  We use our Rogaine/Adventure Race-with-mystery-activities format with a few special warm up activities to kick off.

We can work closely with you to ascertain your needs, abilities and goals and tailor our programme to match exactly. Your team will come away from a fantastic, fun and productive day knowing each other just that little bit better and understanding how to work with their group.

Girls on Top is a club for women that was formed late in 2002, the aim of the club is to get more women (of any age) into the outdoors and let them experience different outdoor activities in a supportive environment that is non threatening, safe and most of all fun. The original club was started in Auckland, but now there are similar groups in Hamilton, Taupo, Wellington and Queenstown.

Girls on Top Auckland have regular Thursday evening runs starting at 6.30pm. Usually running for around 2 hours in total, the runs are split into slow turtles (walk) fast turtles (walk/jog) slow bunnies (jog) fast bunnies (jog/run) hares (run fast). Make sure you bring off road running shoes, water, food, a good head-torch with fresh batteries and a jacket and spare poly prop top in case it is cold and someone gets injured. Check the website www.girlsontop.co.nz for location details

The Huia Road Bush Runners are a small group of social runners and joggers – trails and dam roads preferred, no racing, no roads and they wait for everyone, all followed by a BYO ginger beer...

  • Tuesdays 5:15 pm - Mill Bay, Huia Road, 1st car park (larger). A 55 minute run along Cornwallis beach and trails.
  • Thursdays 5:45 pm - Run from the junction of Huia Road & Exhibition drive, just before Victory Road every Thursday, 50 minutes. Only 5 minutes from Titirangi…
  • Saturdays 2:00 pm Somewhere in the Waitakeres! - We wander around, looking for nice trails and routes, generally a longer run, often 10Km but with a shortcut for the less adventurous. Call or email for details of where they are off to each week

Meet at each location, sign marks the spot, or call Stuart on (09) 811 8990. Check out their blog at http://huiaroadbushrunners.org/  for the Saturday location and get added to the email newsletter.

The Hillary Trail
For those in Auckland looking for a challenge, the Hillary Trail beckons.  The Hillary Trail (advertised as a 4 day tramp) is a 75km trail connecting tracks in the Waitakere Ranges.  It takes in some of the best tracks and is a challenge for body and mind.

The trail has developed quite a following of runners completing the trail.  Times range from 9 hours to 20 hours.  Lactic Turkey have developed a website to celebrate those that have completed the trail in less than a day.  The Hillary Trail Honours Board records all finishes and record holders.  Quite a few attempts of the Trail have been navigationally challenged... so the website also includes a trail guide and this will be refined over time.
