The three-storey project, called the Piazza Learning Centre, will be built on the university’s Heslington East campus. One of its roles would be to offer English language preparation for overseas students looking to do their degrees in York or at other UK universities.
The building, designed by BDP, will accommodate a 350-seat lecture theatre, library, study areas, 200-seat restaurant and social space.
A separate project is underway to clear the site of existing utilities infrastructure, to provide the new building with connection points into mains utilities, and to enhance the capacity of the nearby substation to serve this facility. The University will offer a clear site to the successful bidder.
Construction is slated to begin by no later than the end of March next year with the building operational by July 2017.
