London's Floating Cinema is back for the summer, languidly pootling between moorings in Three Mills in Bow and Granary Square in Kings Cross, taking in Hackney and Clapton en route.

More than just a cinema, the vessel hosts workshops, family fun, talks, artist and science discussions, live music and arts events as well as film screenings.

This summer's programme is called Extra-Terrestrial London and promises to be, ahem, out of this world. As well as fantastical creatures from outer space, the events also explore contemporary issues surrounding earth's sustainability, the commodification of space and what it means to be 'alien'.

This year, the Floating Cinema offers two Open Air Weekenders. Others on Earth (21-23 Aug) takes place in Bow and gets you ready for that moment when aliens invade. Humans in Space (17-20 Sept) features sci-fi classics alongside talks and artist installations exploring the race for planet colonization, cosmic utopias and future intergalactic worlds.

Look out too for the al fresco screenings of artist Shezad Dawood’s 2013 film Piercing Brightness — preceded by an open air performance by Grumbling Fur. And we particularly like the idea of seeing sci-fi cult classics The Day The Earth Stood Still and Flash Gordon (a fancy-dress must!) plus an exciting open air premiere of docudrama The Visit, which imagines what the authorities would actually do in a first contact situation.

Floating Cinema season runs from 21 August to 20 September. All open air events are free; other ticketed events cost between £5-£12. Visit floatingcinema.info to find out more.
