Cloud Native, Cloud Foundry, Docker and Kubernetes

Cloud Native, Cloud Foundry, Docker and Kubernetes

At OSCON yesterday I gave a keynote that was originally planned to be a walkthrough of Cloud Foundry, why it exists, and the current state of the Foundation.  This week marks six months of the existence of the Cloud Foundry Foundation and it seemed like an opportune moment to both review and look forward.

However, during the week, a new foundation was launched (the Cloud Native Computing Foundation) on the heels of the last new foundation (the Open Container Initiative).  As a result there were a pair of questions that came up in nearly every conversation I had, whether casual or formal:

  1. Why are there so many foundations?
  2. How do all these technologies work together?

We rewrote the keynote to focus on this questions.  I've gotten some of the most positive feedback of any talk I've ever given.

If you are wondering about the same questions, here is the video of the 15-minute keynote:

The slides are of course on Slideshare, and I encourage you to read Stephen O'Grady's excellent full-length article on "The Implications of Cloud Native" to get a fuller historical perspective.

Charlie Babcock wrote an article that referenced and summarized the talk here: http://www.informationweek.com/cloud/platform-as-a-service/cloud-native-what-it-means-why-it-matters

Here's to the era of Open Source Foundations and Cloud Native Computing.

Great preso, lucid and clear. What do you see as the role of OpenStack in this? What would you want/ like OpenStack to enable?

I think a summary would be a great thing, guess opensource.com among others would be interested in a similar thing. Just my two euro cents!
