It’s no secret that we love Q.E.D. Part performance space, part bar, and part venue for a diverse selection of classes, this spot always has something new and exciting going on. We were dying to learn more about this cool, quirky neighborhood favorite, so we asked owner Kambri Crews to give us some inside scoop. She was cool enough to share what she’s been most proud of, what she sees for the future, and which Rock and Roll Hall of Famer she dreams of booking.

Since opening on October 10th, 2014, Q.E.D. has not only welcomed an impressive roster of nationally-recognized talent, it’s also provided a stage for local performers to grow. While Kambri was thrilled with the success of events like multiple sold-out Saturday Night Live writers’ showcases featuring household names like Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Jay Pharaoh, she also prides herself in establishing Q.E.D. as “a space for the up-and-coming writers, actors, comics, and musicians to develop their act and hone their voice.” Kambri believes Astoria has always been rich with creative types, but “we’ve often had to trek to Manhattan or the far reaches of Brooklyn to go where the “scenes” are. It’s about time we had a scene of our own and they came to us!”

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more diverse selection of classes anywhere in the five boroughs. From swing dancing to special effects makeup, there’s always something to learn, whether it be for professional reasons or pure curiosity. As a result of such a varied selection, Kambri has learned how to make henna tattoos, crochet, and make beer at home, among countless other things. A wine and cheese pairing class is coming up in July, which is a skill everyone can use, don’t you think? A full list of upcoming classes can be found here.

Q.E.D. has also been a strong supporter of  other local businesses: they serve draught beer by Singlecut Beersmiths, pastries by Rose & Joe’s, and bistro boxes from Astoria Bier and Cheese, all of which are perfect to enjoy while watching a show. They’ve also joined forces with Astoria Bookshop to sell books by and for comedians and artists. This is especially sweet for Kambri, as she’s an avid reader and also the published author of the memoir Burn Down The Ground.

Wine and cheese are a perfect pair, and go perfectly with Q.E.D.'s performance lineup!

Even with all the success Q.E.D. has enjoyed, Kambri still has a wish list for future performers and events. She would love to someday welcome comedians Jim Gaffigan and Lisa Lampanelli, and eventually organize additional events like singer-songwriter open mic nights, more theatrical productions, festivals, and contests. But there’s one performer who would be the ultimate “get.” That would be their “Patron Saint of Performing:” David Lee Roth. The venue has a pencil drawing of him hanging on their walls, as well as a strictly-enforced “No Van Hagar” rule on their property.  Q.E.D. opened on Roth’s 60th birthday, and every year they plan to throw an anniversary bash/David Lee Roth birthday party on that date, with the hopes that he will one day attend. (Okay Astoria, let’s help Kambri out. Who has a connection to David Lee Roth and can make this happen?!)
