800+ Writers’ Real Experiences With Self-Publishing
Last week, I surveyed over 830 writers about their experience and interest in self-publishing e-books and print-on-demand (POD) physical books.
Writers were contacted through my blog subscriber list, Freelance Writers Den waiting list, and via Facebook.
The results paint a fascinating picture of how many writers are exploring self-publishing as a way to create additional income from their writing, and what successes — and problems — they have found.
Here’s what the writers had to say about themselves, and about their self-publishing efforts:
Nearly half are working freelance writers
Less than 20% have self-published an e-book or POD book
…But many are interested in print-on-demand publishing:
Many writers lack funds, or need marketing/tech knowledge
Good news:Â Most used basic tech such as Word doc-to-Kindle — and found it easy to use
Bad news: Most writers earned little from their self-published books
Roughly half made under $100
