Alex Massie: why I will hold my nose and vote Labour

At the end of a dismal election campaign, I shall plump for the least bad choice

Be happy in your vote tomorrow. I know I won’t be. If there has been a more dismal election than this I cannot recall it. This contest is as depressing as it is important. Neither of the men who might be prime minister commands much confidence, neither has run a campaign that inspires admiration or makes one think they deserve to be prime minister.

And yet one of them must be. In Scotland, the choice is more complicated than it is in England but no more appetising. Many voters must decide between the unbearable and the unpalatable. Never before, I think, will so many votes have been cast with so little enthusiasm. We are where we are, however, and must resolve to make the best
