North Carolina: Marriage Ban Is Challenged

The Buncombe County register of deeds, Drew Reisinger, said Monday that he would accept marriage license applications from same-sex couples and seek an opinion from the state attorney general, Roy Cooper. A 2012 amendment to North Carolina’s Constitution forbids the marriages. Mr. Reisinger said he had been forced to deny marriage licenses to “upstanding citizens” and he felt that was not fair. His announcement came hours after Mr. Cooper said he supported same-sex marriage. But Mr. Cooper also said his views would not prevent him from defending the ban in court, and his office said the licenses could not be issued.
