ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– St. Louis is suddenly becoming the hot newcomer in the world of high-tech entrepreneurs and information technology start-ups.

An article in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal online, praises the gateway city’s start-up scene adding to the growing buzz.

St. Louis is the fastest growing city in the country when it comes to technology jobs, and the average tech salary is around $81,000. The growth has been going on for years, but it’s caught fire in the past two years for lots of reasons.

In the industrial age, it was the railway exchange building. In the post-industrial digital age, it’s t-rex a creative incubator downtown for startups in IT (information technology).

There are now lots of incubators in St. Louis and lots of IT start-ups.

When St. Louisans Jack Dorsey, who co-founded Twitter, and Jim McKelvey started Square, a smart phone credit card reader, they wanted to locate the headquarters here. But there wasn’t enough computer talent in St. Louis, so they moved it to San Francisco.

That’s changing, but there are still more jobs here than qualified workers. So Square co-founder McKelvey started Launch Code, which pairs newbie computer experts with seasoned veterans.

And 5,000 jobs, paying between $80,000- $100,000 each, you do the math.

And McKelvey says St. Louis is poised for some explosive growth in IT, to go along with the growth the city’s already seen in bio-sciences.
