Calling architects: win a £40,000 commission

The call is out – Blueprint is looking for a young architecture practice to work with an artist on a major new £40,000 commission. Blueprint has teamed up with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Ryder Architecture for this exciting installation.

Blueprint

Blueprint, Ryder Architecture, and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, are seeking an emerging architectural practice for a major artistic collaboration to take place at the Gateshead gallery in 2015.

The successful practice will have the opportunity to work creatively with a contemporary artist on a £40,000 commission and will receive a £2500 prize. This unique partnership will explore the relationship between architecture and art by uniting an emerging practice with a visual artist to produce a co-authored installation.

A shortlist will be drawn up from an open submission. To be eligible to enter, your practice must be no more than fi ve years old at the time of the application and contain no more than ten architects. All submissions will be judged by a panel consisting of Blueprint editor, Johnny Tucker, Ryder senior partner, Peter Buchan, and BALTIC chief curator, Laurence Sillars.

To realise the project, the successful candidate will work with BALTIC and an artist selected by the gallery. This exciting opportunity follows the success of the installation Subtle Knife 2013 co-authored by Ryder and renowned Glasgow-based artist Sara Barker. The work, a striking glass and brass sculpture, used Philip Pullman's novel of the same name as a creative starting point, and also responded to the volume of BALTIC's redeveloped Level 2 gallery where the commission was shown.

This 2015 commission is jointly funded by Ryder and BALTIC with the prize money donated by Ibstock.
