News from the Churches of Southern Virginia
Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia                      November 25, 2014

On November 9, Emmanuel, Virginia Beach had their first GO Day. It is a day that encourages us to GO...to go out into the world, to go make a difference in your local community. Participants wrote notes of encouragement, packed Manna Bags for the homeless, and baked chocolate chip cookies for several of the 12-step groups that meet at Emmanuel.

Display of Nativities from around the world will benefit outreach to homeless individuals

The Bruton Parish Shop is preparing the way with a special event to mark this Advent season. In our homes, many of us celebrate the birth of Christ with a cherished Nativity or Crech - many treasured for years or collected from around the world.

You are invited to join us and walk "The Road to Bethlehem" in Lewis Hall of the Bruton Parish House on Thanksgiving weekend - Friday & Saturday, Nov. 28 & 29 (from 10am to 5pm), and on Sunday, Nov. 30 (from 12 noon to 5pm), the first Sunday in Advent.

Come see this display of Nativities from around our world to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas by focusing on the humble birth of the blessed baby Jesus and by helping those for whom there is also "no room at the inn" - people who are homeless.

A free-will offering will be accepted to benefit Bruton's outreach programs to help the homeless.
Mission of the Holy Spirit needs your help!

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs.'--John 21:15

The Mission Food Pantry is nearly empty, and Mission families depend on food from the Mission to feed their hungry children. Non-perishable items are needed, such as canned soup, meat, vegetables and fruit. We also need pasta, rice, cereal and other healthy dried goods. Please consider a food drive for your EWC, EYC, Outreach or other church group. For more information or to arrange a drop-off time, please contact the Mission at 757-858-0010 on Mondays or Wednesdays. Thank you for helping us to feed His lambs, and God bless you!

Bethlehem Walk is much more than a live Nativity

St. Aidan's, Virginia Beach invites everyone to join them along with King's Grant Presbyterian and St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in taking a trip to ancient Bethlehem at the annual Bethlehem Walk at King's Grant Presbyterian Church, 745 Little Neck Road in Virginia Beach. This is far more than a nativity scene, and includes shops from Bethlehem, Roman guards, live animals, wise men, rabbis and much more.

Imagine the tiny village of Bethlehem 2000 years ago ...register your family with the census taker at the gate, walk the crowded streets, visit the bustling marketplace and talk with the vendors busy in their shops. Hear a story at the well, worship with the Rabbi in the Synagogue, but beware of the Roman soldiers who patrol the streets to keep order in this seemingly insignificant Judean town. See the shepherds watching their flocks under the winter sky. Listen to the villagers talking in hushed voices about seeing angels and the birth of a very special baby. Keep your eyes and ears open to whatever miracles may occur. But don't plan to stay overnight - the Inn is full.

It isn't a play. It isn't a pageant. It is encountering Christ and the mystery of Christmas the way we believe it all began.

The Bethlehem Walk is free and will be held Friday, December 5 from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 from 4:30 to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 7 from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
